The idea? Make it possible for your wireless provider to monitor everything you do online and charge you extra for using Facebook, Skype or Netflix. For instance, in the seventh slide of the above PowerPoint, a Vodafone user would be charged two cents per MB for using Facebook, three euros a month to use Skype and $0.50 monthly for a speed-limited version of YouTube. But traffic to Vodafone’s services would be free, allowing the mobile carrier to create video services that could undercut NetFlix on price. Hat tip to Steven who reminded me to reblog this. Most people won’t care about this until they start actually having to pay and by then, it will be too late. This is shameful that we allowed this. Shameful. The ISP’s are already being paid to provide Internet access. Now they will make money off the backs of all the companies that established themselves when we lived like there was Net Neutrality. Pretty hard to create another Google or You Tube or E-Bay or Amazon or Twitter or Facebook or Tumblr, etc without protections. Innovation has been smothered by greed. What is there left to say? I wonder what immediate favors the Administration won with this Titanic appeasement, one that 90% of the electorate won’t have felt the impact of come next election (or will they have). One day though we’ll look back at this decision with the same jaw gaping amazement as we do the 17th century sale of Manhattan for $24. What a fleecing.
